Product Description

Delonix Regia (Gulmohar) is a species of flowering plant. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. Gulmohar is arguably the prettiest tree in the world. Come summer, you cannot ignore – or be indifferent to – its charm, as the blossoms paint the landscape in a riot of bright scarlet-to-orange hues. It is one of the most extensively cultivated trees across the world. The tree is known by several names. The popular Indian name gul mohar refers to the beauty of its flowers (Persian gul = flower and mohar or mor = pea cock), possibly why it is known as ‘peacock tree’ as well. Gulmohar grows up to 30 m in height and its crown is umbrella shaped. Because it is a legume, the tree has nitrogen-fixing and soil improving properties. It also has some medicinal properties like Anti-diabetic activity, Anti-bacterial activity, Anti-diarrheal property, Hepatoprotective/Cytotoxic property, Anti-microbial activity, anti-inflammatory activity.

    Instructions for planting:

  • The Gulmohar tree needs a frost-free location and full sun.
  • It will grow in clay, loam, sandy and gravelly soil, as long as there is good drainage.
  • With a sharp knife, clip a few brown or black seed pods from the tree.
  • This is a process where seeds are soaked in water in order to soften the outer shell, helping the seedling push through.
  • An alternative way to soften the shell is to put the seeds in boiling water. Once the pot comes to a boil, turn off the heat and add the seeds. You can leave the seeds in the pot or place them in a jar covered with water, then store them in a shaded spot for 24 hours.
  • Once the seeds have soaked, get your pots and fill them to the top with your bonsai soil mix or any fast-draining soil.
  • Poke your fingertip into the soil or make a hole around 1/2 inch deep and plant one seed per pot.
  • Cover the seed with soil, lightly patting it around the seed.
  • Place your pot in a sunny location and water it to keep the soil moist, but not wet.
  • In as little as three days you will see your new flamboyant trees budding through the soil.
  • Your trees will grow very fast and sprout branches and leaves after only a week.
  • After two weeks, you can transplant them outside or in a larger container.
    Instructions for care:

  • Keep the tree at least 10 feet from structures and paved areas as the roots are shallow and spreading and can cause damage.
  • Prune trees to remove wayward, broken, dead, or diseased branches and limbs, or for safety around utility lines.
  • Gulmohar needs watering frequently when they are young. Water deeply about twice a week. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
  • Never over fertilize! You will see lots of weak, leafy growth and few flowers
  • Check occasionally for pests such as caterpillars, which can cause some foliage damage.
