Grand Nain bananas or G9 bananas are the species that belong to the family of Musa acuminata. There are several species of bananas cultivated so far and this is one of the most common species. The Grand Nain is a monocot and belongs to genus of Musa. Nearly all bananas cultivars are descendants of Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana so species designation is quite difficult. The banana which is termed as Musa scientifically is a fruit which is variable in size color and firmness. There are two wild species of banana, one is Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. This plant is one of the largest herbaceous plant. Plants have trunk looking false stem which is known as pseudostem. Plants are generally tall and strong.Leaves of banana is made up of petiole(stalk) and lamina(blade). The crom of the plant will stop producing leaves and begins to form flower spike when the banana plant is matured. Musa species are generally grown in tropical regions of Indomalaya and Australia and are domesticated in Papua New Guinea. They are grown in almost 135 countries. They are grown mainly for the fruits and for some other purposes like fiber, banana wine, banana beer or as some ornamental plants. Almost every part of banana plant is used and is economically good and yield maximum profit once grown in a proper way. Fruits, flowers, trunk, leaves,etc are used in different ways.

Instruction for planting:

  • Constant humidity should be there.
  • Bananas can be propagated from banana sucker which is either cutted from tree or taken from other source.
  • Cut off all the dead portion of the banana sucker before planting it.
  • Dig a hole and plant the stem.
  • Soil with pH value of 5.5-7 is optimum for the growth of plants.
  • Site is so selected that maximum sunlight can be incident on plants.
  • Bananas will grow better in maximum supply of water but they will be rotten if water is not drained properly.
  • If planted indoors then also warm temperature, high humidity and 12 hours of sunlight is required.
  • They should be planted in pot which is adjustable to the size while it grows.
  • Once the fruit is harvested, you can de-suck the plant and can use it for propagation again.
  • We can use andy loam soil organically rich which has pH 6.0 – 7.5 and having good drainage.

Instruction for care:

  • Bananas can take years to grow so site should be selected in such a way that temperature should remain constant throughout the year.
  • For the cultivation of banana ideal daytime temperatures are between 26–30ºC , with night temperatures no lower than 20ºC.
  • Always use store bought fertilizer, compost, manure, or a mixture of these.
  • Add fertilizer immediately after planting and keep providing the fertilizer to the plant monthly.
  • Over watering should be avoided. Water can be reduced at every session if plant is not dried well.
  • Fruits are available on the plant once they purple flower is ripened and fall off from the plant.
  • You can add the waste from the garden and can put it around the banana plant to get the nutrients back to the soil.
