Instructions for planting:

  • Fig seeds need soaking in lukewarm water for 1 to 2 days before being planted into soil.
  • The seeds which are good and viable will drop to the bottom of the glass while infertile seeds will float on the surface.
  • Viable seeds should be germinated in a tray filled with moist granular bonsai mix, small lava grit or vermiculite.
  • Place a plastic cover or bag over the top of the tray and place the tray in a warm area that receives indirect sunlight.
  • As long as condensation appears on the inside surface of the bag or lid, the seeds don’t need to be watered.
  • Germination can take up to eight weeks.
  • Once small sprouts with leaves appear on the surface, remove the lid or bag each day for a few hours.
  • When the seedlings have reached a few inches in height, they can be gently removed from the seedling tray and planted into 2 to 3-inch pots.
  • The seedlings can be planted into regular potting soil and should be watered well for the first two weeks after transplanting.
  • After this period, they should only be watered when the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch.
  • When seedlings are fully grown in few weeks, remove the plant from its pot and remove any circling roots by laying the root ball on its side and using shears to cut through the roots.
  • Dig a hole that is a few inches deeper and wider than the spread of the roots.
  • Set the tree on top of a small mound of soil in the middle of the hole.
  • Be sure to spread the roots away from the trunk without excessively bending them.
  • Plant the tree 2 to 4 inches deeper than it was originally in the pot.

Instructions for care:

  • The young fig trees need to be watered regularly to be established.
  • You can also apply a layer of mulch around the tree to help prevent weeds and keep in moisture for the roots.
  • Fig trees require little pruning. Be sure to remove all dead, diseased, or weak branches to encourage growth.
  • Figs require full sun all day to ripen palatable fruits.
  • Fig tree roots generally are very invasive and sometimes can choke out other plants and can damage sidewalks, driveways and other objects in their paths.
  • Fig trees usually do best on the outskirts of a garden or surrounded by plenty of open space.
  • You should harvest figs when they are fully ripe. The figs should be fully colored and slightly soft to the touch.
  • Wear gloves or long sleeves while picking figs because the sap from the fig tree can irritate your skin.
